A single case study may be preferred when an analysis of an empirically-rich and content-specific needs to be done. But multiple case study will be preferred under the conditions when something is embedded under a context and it is to be extracted out of it.
For example: single case study is used when I need to study about a particular thing like a company and its products or its evolution. But I will use multiple case study when I will have to study its progress over time and the changes it encountered from year to year.
Interview will be preferred over survey when the data required is small and personal interaction in needed to be done with the people to gather their responses. It will also be used when the set of questions to be asked from the respondents are not standardized or structured.
Survey will be preferred over interview when the data is required to be gathered from a large audience and the time to collect data is less. Also, structured and same questions are required to be asked from people and personal interaction is not required with them.
