For doing so she needs help and intervention. There are certain community services available to help Katie in coping with the anxieties and depressions that are triggered by Katie’s disabilities. Such disabilities have forced Katie to remain isolated and alienated from the society. It should be noted that “Community-based mental health care encompasses a wide variety of programs and services designed to meet local needs. These programs are delivered primarily by community agencies and sometimes through hospitals or health clinics. There are several procedures that staff might use to initiate and maintain contact with these groups. The staff should convey the advantages and disadvantages of the community programs and the staff should also remember that the groups should be kept well informed about the benefits that they could obtain from participating in the community programs. The staff should try to empower the group members in such a way that they feel obliged to participate in the program in an active manner and in a more devoted way. It should also be taken into account that the staff should help the group members to enhance their morale and motivation in terms of participating in the community programs in a thorough manner.

Elisa is a young woman who has fairly recently become physically disabled from an accident that left her paralysed from the waist down. Since release from hospital, Elisa has been living with her parents and receiving support from community support staff on a daily basis. Elisa was a professional tennis player and since the accident she refuses to see her friends who are all tennis players. Elisa has become socially isolated and quite depressed.

The person-centred approach would help Elisa cope with her present conditions and this would also help her in narrowing the gap that she has been building between her and the mainstream society. It should be noted that the staff should try to empower Elisa in such a manner that she becomes eager to participate in the caring and support regime that is meant for initiating her recovery – both physical and mental.

Answer:
There are certain philosophies, theories and practices relating to skill development and community inclusion for people with a disability. In this respect social cooperation and community program participation should be considered as two important practices that can empower people with disabilities to lead a quality life in a thorough manner. 

 

5. How might staff apply an understanding of current philosophies, theories and practices relating to skills development and community inclusion when assisting Elisa? 
Answer:
In order to empower Elisa, it is of utmost importance that she is imparted with counselling sessions and along with that she should be supported to enhance her social skills. Being sociable is the best part of mental health in regards to disabled individuals. The conventional philosophies, theories and practices together with the modern approaches will enable the individual with disability to live a better life.

 

6. How might increasing Elisa’s skills and competency give her a sense of independence and empowerment? (50 words)
Answer:
Increasing Elisa’s skills and competency can give her a sense of independence and empowerment. The enhancement in her skills and competency would enhance and increase her decision-making abilities and this would help Elisa in mingling with the mainstream society once again. Such would help in the process of her recovery in a thorough manner.

Answer:
To avoid Elisa feeling overwhelmed and shaky when learning how to shower herself, staff might about skill development in this area. They should try for skill development by motivating and empowering Elisa in a way that she gets ready for participating in the process whole-heartedly and in a thorough manner. 

 

8. Identify what might motivate and de-motivate Elisa to learn the skills necessary to become more independent and to re-integrate into the community. (50 words)
Answer:
There are some aspects that might motivate and de-motivate Elisa to learn the skills necessary to become more independent and to re-integrate into the community. Her social involvement initially can encourage her in this respect but any pressure on unwillingly attending social events can de-motivate her and make the situation more complicated.
