Write an essay on Communication, Language and Literacy.
The enhancement in the education literacy of young children’s is at the priority in most of the countries. If the language development is efficient in the early literacy education it acts as the potential framework for improving the literacy outcomes of the young children. Literacy evolves in the child since the birth and it is communicated in the forms of listening, speaking, reading and writing. On the other hand, critical literacy arises with the inspection of the social, political, and cultural purpose of the text. Critical literacy starts with the assumption that all the varieties of text, i.e. from print to multimedia have the ultimate goal of transmitting knowledge to the child (Bravo Paniagua, 2015). The inclusion of the concept of critical starts from the elementary and play school, and students should be taught in a way that they will accept them in a critical way rather than accepting uncritically.in the present essay we have discussed the approaches of critical literacy by using the four resources model framework by which the impact of literacy development will be evaluated by making discussion that how optimal language learning will be enhanced by using the critical literacies in the early childhood education and its implication on the diverse learning (Morrow, L. M. 2001).
Theoretical perspectives and approaches to the inclusion of critical literacies in play-based education and its impact on children's literacy development.
Critical literacy addresses the literacy and language issues that are getting a lot of attention in the 21st century. Critical literacy has been developed by the set of beliefs that move outside the belief that reading is simply understanding the beliefs of the authors. For moving forward with this approach t it is essential to promote critical literacy in the classrooms (Wright,2015). For that teachers have to work on it to promote critical literacy in the classrooms as they help the students in bringing life issues that re of social relevance, which help the students to think, reflect and develop their own perspective (Leu et al., 2004)
In the words of Knobel(2014), critical literacy is dependent on the sociocultural theory, as both are based on the understanding of the interrelationship between, culture, language, learning, and practice. Sociocultural theory is pinned with critical literacy as it states that language is a social practice by which we can understand and construct our world. The brief concept of sociological approach helps in supporting the inclusion of critical literacy in the early childhood practice. A sociological approach to literacy in the early education visions literacy as the social practice by which the children’s will learn the active participation in the context of home, schools and community centers (Jocius,2015). For example, the practice of watching television and the practices related to cultural practice will vary between the home setting and the educational setting. As watching television is a regular practice but it is not valued in the early childhood setting as it creates the wrong impression in the minds of children's. The sociological approach to literacy identifies that child have to use its own knowledge in judgments as it acts as the bridge in terms of literacy practices and knowledge. In this way, the sociological approach to literacy creates value in the knowledge by creating space which helps in the construction of new understandings (Morrow, L. M. 2001).
On the other hand, the critical approach to literacy moves beyond it and point out that literacy inquires teachers to accept diversity and examine the ways in which the patterns of inequality are constructed, which helps in the development of literacy competence among the children's. Therefore we can say that the sociological approaches form a base of inclusion of critical literacy in the early childhood education (Funk,2015).
Critical literacy enhances the cultural diversity and pedagogical knowledge among children’s210
Development of pedagogical knowledge in terms of instructional quality has a direct impact on the learning and achievement of children in their early phases Results from the Effective Arrangement of Pre-school Education (EPPE), a broad longitudinal examination attempted in the UK to look at the effect of early training and care on kids' psychological also, social behavioral results, gave much needed knowledge into particular academic practices that were related with accomplishing 'superb' results (Jocius,2015). The concept of critical literacy open spaces for critical awareness in terms of cultural diversity in countries. For that, the teacher has to create the environment for the children in terms of providing multicultural books to them, which helps the children sin discussion and recreating the stories, by writing, which helps the children’s in creating the deeper thoughts of knowledge (McInulty,2014). This study helps in accelerating the literacy development and in addition also provides an opportunity to understand others, by exploring the meaning of diversity and equality. The imbibement of the concept of cultural diversity in the early learning encourages social change in the children's in terms of developing a positive attitude towards cultural diversity by becoming critical and active readers (Leu et al., 2004).
In the last few years, there has been an increasing focus on the inclusion of critical literacies in the Australian schools, which influence the early childhood education curriculum of the schools. This impact will be seen in the publications like Makin, Barat Pugh, McLachlan, Rohl and Jones Diaz. These publications offer a valuable basis which helps in examining the critical literacy practices in the early childhood years. In the publication of Carmen Luke it is highlighted that “ from early stages, kids are without a doubt drenched in the writings of mainstream culture, and their comprehension of account, of good versus abhorrent, of legends and courageous women, sexual orientation, race, and social power, is found out from those writings"(p,30) .
Critical literacy practices in early childhood education can provide support to the young children in understanding the concepts in the form of texts that convey a number of messages and present the original portrait of the world. As (Gallingane,2015 ) states that the inclusion of critical literacy in early childhood will provide support to the young ones in developing the expectations in terms of learning and helps in examining the skills. In addition to that the scholars (Music,2016 ) suggested that critical literacy practices will be included in the early childhood setting, by adopting the practice of encouraging children with the help of media and images. (Deitcher, 2014 ) suggests that the fairytales like Cinderella will invite conversation with children’s in terms of gender roles, like for example: how males and females will be positioned in the story which helps in judging the gender stereotyping evidence in the context of culture. But on the other hand, the critical literacy practices sometimes raises the ethical issues in the context of young children. For example the critical literacy practice of inspiring young children in terms of questioning the gender stereotyping sometimes result in raising questions from the part of children in terms of current and future gender roles. This makes the child in direct conflict with the beliefs of their parents and expectations on the part of a child (Luke, A. 2018).
Play is defined as the evolutionary and intrinsic activity and it value a lot in the learning of young children. Play based approaches of learning are highly encouraged in Ontario Early learning Kindergarten Program. In the words of (Myers, 2015) play is the life of children and children’s will learn a lot through play. The link between play and literacy is considered as the most researched areas in the fields of early literacy. Play based approaches helps the children’s in understanding the figurative and oral education by expanding the domain of their knowledge. A strong agreement will be made in the terms that paly is essential for critical and literacy learning (Deitcher, 2014 ).
The play based approaches contains all the developmental tendencies that are necessary for the children in the overall development. This creates the place for language learning by maximizing the literacy learning which encourages the play based learning The play based learning will be enhanced by the use of materials like clipboards, flyers, play dough, and other literacy materials which allow children’s to use language in the optimal way (Morales,2015).
For encouraging the paly based learning the role of educator is very important as they become the part of the learning process by creating new skills that will create interest in learning among children’s, (T. A.,2015). If the teacher company their students in play rather than imposing their understanding of play, the learning will be more effective and powerful. The teachers need to interact with their students by using the best possible literacy materials, which encourage learning during play, by creating a classroom that helps in encouraging play in critical literacy (Wright,2015). In order to develop the critical literacy among children’s by using paly based learning the teachers have to search out the materials which make the concept of play learning an interesting one for facilitating critical literacy learning (Alper, M. 2013).
Critical literacy moves beyond literacy and studies the nature and purpose of literacy. Literacy is seen as the medium of expressing views for learning. The concept of critical literacy plays an important role in the literacy development of children in the early stages of learning (Funk, 2015). As we know that the preschool years are seen as the critical time for literacy learning and development, and the teachers played an important role in developing critical literacy among children in the play based learning approaches. This essay highlights the sociocultural theory of critical literacy which helps in the social and cultural development of the children. In addition to that this essay also highlights that how the addition of critical literacy in Australian schools impact on the learning and development of preschool children with the help of quoted examples and suggestions of different eminent scholars (Funk, 2015).
