Norman McLaren was very interested in developing amateur films. John Grierson at the GPO film unit hired Norman McLaren. He was impressed by the film Color Cocktail (1935). The unique design and colors of the movie attracted the overall attention of Grierson by which he chooses Norman for his GPO film unit. In 1939, John Grierson was asked by the Canadian Government to establish the National Film Board (NFB). So, John Grierson invited Norman McLaren to come to Canada and make films for the NFB.
