Media Analysis: The Movie, Blade Runner, as a Dystopian Movie

There are different genres of movie and each genre has its own significance. There are movies that can be categorized under the heading of science fictions, but quite interestingly, the genre of science fiction can again be subdivided into the genre of dystopia. Dystopia itself is a film genre in which the bleakness of the modern society and the future is highlighted. Dystopia is a “futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control” (“Dystopias: Definition and Characteristics”). It must also be noted that “Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system” (“Dystopias: Definition and Characteristics”).

In the movie, “Blade Runner,” the depiction of the dystopian ideology has been thoroughly depicted. directed by Ridley Scot and released in the year 1982 (Schloss), Blade runner should be considered as a gem among the cult science fiction movies in which the degeneration of the society has been equalled to the concept of dystopia. The movie should be considered as belonging to the genre of dystopia primarily because it is infused with the philosophy and ideology of a dystopian society. The movie depicts the post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where the society has been turned into a bleak one, full of despair and hopelessness, and thoroughly controlled by technology. The domination of a single corporation over a dark society has been the primary theme of the dystopian genre of the movie, Blade Runner where the protagonist is also faced with uncertainties and sometimes with despair. One of the major criteria to be a dystopian movie is to depict scenarios in which technology rules over the human society, turning the society into a grimmer and bleaker one. The over-dominance of science over morality is also a factor that has been ingrained in the plot of the movie, Blade Runner, and it is due to this infusion that the movie is still being considered as an embodiment of the dystopian genre of movies. In the distant future, Los Angeles has been turned into a hub for producing organic robots that have the capacity of replacing human beings, but are devoid of feelings or emotions. It is this indication of the fear that in the future the human race would be on the verge of extinction that makes the plot of the movie ideally a dystopian one.

In conclusion, it can be said that dystopia itself is a film genre in which the bleakness of the modern society and the future is highlighted. The movie, Blade Runner should be considered as an ideal dystopian movie because of the bleakness depicted in its plot and in the progress of the plot. The dominate on of machine over man, technology over morality, and science over spirituality – all have indicated the fact that the movie is an iconic dystopian movie in which the future of humankind has been projected to be an insecure and dilemmatic one, full of hopelessness and despair.
