Answer to Question 1:

The issue which has been discussed and dealt with the documentary Solitary Nation by Dan Edge is about very strange and exceptional view of the isolated lives of the prisoner, who is also known as the solitary inmates. This documentary presents us with the fact of the life where the people those have committed crimes in the prison and sent to live alone a special cell apart from the prison where many people stay together in the Maine State Prison. Their life are completely being segregated and desolated from others where they have to live alone in a small room for six months or even more(‘Frontline’ Looks at Jail in ‘Solitary Nation’", 2019). Their sentence in this solitary world if they create any discordance to the unit or even if they cause any harm to themselves. The isolation confinement started in the United States of America around 1800 so as to reform the criminals through isolating and segregating them into specialized units. But this was not effective as the prisoners did not get any sort of reformation after placing them in isolation. The solitary prison confinements are mainly based in United States of America where it is estimated that there are eighty thousand criminals and most of the people spend their years in these confinements even if they had not committed any crime for years ("HuffPost is now part of Oath", 2019).

Answer to Question 2:

This documentary has focused on the criminals those who are placed in the prison within the prison. People who have created crime in the main prison like assaulting of staff, breaking the jaws of the other prisoner as mentioned in this video, they are liable to join this isolated confinements starting from two months to a period of one year or even more. As the research has been done on the numbers of criminals, for around eighty thousand in the United States of America ("FRONTLINE: Solitary Nation", 2019). The individuals basically cause harm to themselves, get physically as well as mentally ill, won’t be able to get socialized with others, won’t be able to get jobs in complete they will become dormant within themselves and useless in front of the society. These individuals are taken into the solitary confinement to reform their behaviours and acts of crime. People those who sometimes get mentally ill and retarded are also transferred from the Maine State Prison to this prison("Last Days of Solitary", 2019). For several year the United States of America has created uphold on the prison where these criminals are confined to.

Answer to Question 3:

Dan Edge, the filmmaker of this documentary focused more on the negative sides of the criminals while highlighting the positive sides of the solitary confinements. This documentary is sort of a prejudice which is created by the director-producer. He tries to go more into the reformation of the prisoners criminally, rather than a corrective measurement. He always keeps on uttering the word ‘criminal’ instead of the word ‘prisoner’. He could have shown more on the rehabilitation facility which they could avail in the purpose of getting mental stability ("FRONTLINE | Prison State | History & Documentary | WMHT", 2019). Instead of that, the director is showing us about extreme explicit graphic violence through this documentary, which includes an individual who is harming his own body, blood shattered in the room, floors, poops and pees overflowing from the commode. The filmmaker has basically tried to show the violent parts within the residents of segregation camps. These acts of violence are surely ghastly and it must have contemplation in the minds of the audience or the viewers. This documentary has not focused on the emotional turmoils that they are going through as a reason of isolation but rather the documentary shows more on how to combat their mental situations through acting upon violence ("BBC Two - This World, Life in Solitary - Life in Solitary", 2019).

Answer to Question 4:

  • a)    This documentary helps in finding out about the conditions of the prisoners in the solitary confinements. This documentary deals with the living conditions of the people those who recommitted crimes in the Maine State Prison, while showing unhygienic places in the confinements and daily lives of the prisoners("Solitary Nation", 2019).

  • b)    There are certain factors which I don’t like about the documentary which is the complete biasness of the director on presenting the positive facts about the solitary prison centres. Instead of showing the negative effects of the solitary confinement unit, the director is focusing more on the positive side of the confinements for the reformation of the prisoners("Maine officials react to new documentary showing solitary confinement at Maine State Prison", 2019).

  • c)    This documentary has led me to understand the view of the solitary confinements of the prisoners and their daily livelihoods in the same ordinance for a long period of time. It shows that how the government in the United States of America deals with the prisoners those who commit crimes and misdoings in the prison itself.

  • d)    The director of this documentary is constantly talking about these solitary confinements as the reformations for the prisoners. But the impact is totally different from the process they are implementing which results in the performing the act of physical injuries, violence and torture and even degradation of the mental health of the prisoners. Out of the confinements their lives will be of no use to the world as in they won’t get jobs, education, or any social acceptance.

  • e)    The documentary presents a very horrendous detail of the lives of the prisoners in the solitary prison confinements which lead them to suffer from several mental illness and other issues concerning degradation of health.

Answer to Question 5:

We could only get the outer view of the cell whereas the inner view of the cell is not present in many times. The film maker could have installed by placing Go Pro cams inside the cell so as to view their behaviours and lifestyle in every detail. If this is a documentary then every people those who are concerned or those who should be concerned must be presented in this video like the medical health team, psychologists, sociologists, etc. to present their views about the prisoners in front of the camera("SOLITARY NATION – Locked Up in America series", 2019). The victims of their crimes should also be faced in front of the camera which could prove their level of innocence and crime.
