Article 1 

In the article, “Toward the Virtual Supply chain: The Convergence of IT and Organization,” Chandrashekar and Schary (1999) have emphasized the importance of virtual supply chain. The authors have suggested that any chain or network that is connected through electronic links can be considered as virtual (Chandrashekar & Schary, 1999). But the definition of virtual supply chain should not be confined to this mere definition only. Virtual supply chain includes more than electronic links; rather, it embodies an organizational structure that paves the way for efficient and effective flows of physical goods and information in a seamless manner (Chandrashekar & Schary, 1999). As an advantage, virtual supply chain is flexible and it quickly adapt to changes and is also quick in adopting changes. But there is a disadvantage too. It has been pointed out by Chandrashekar and Schary (1999) that as a result of the implementation of virtual supply chains old members can be easily deleted or have role reassigned to them within the chain, and this can be hard to adapt to. But what the authors have conveyed is that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of the implementation of virtual supply chains. In this respect it must be said that virtual supply chains have the ability to reconfigure organizational structures and this provides the chain the capability to customize solutions for several different segments of customers and it also helps in keeping up with changes in customer requirements (Chandrashekar & Schary, 1999). It is this adaptability of the chain which is likely to lead to competition not between organizations but between chains (Chandrashekar & Schary, 1999).

In yet another article, “Virtual supply-chain management,” Gunasekaran and Ngai (2007) have suggested that to infuse greater transparency in supply chain operations it has now become a need to indulge in the implementation of virtual supply chains. The primary advantage of such switch over is the obtainment of flexibility in operation. Virtual supply chain provides and openness and this openness in supply chain paves the way for the organizations to see how their suppliers are actually performing (Gunasekaran & Ngai, 2007). It must also be noted that virtual supply chain entails e-logistics tools that are necessary to support the key player with open communication and shared information in almost every single stage of the order to delivery process. This is an added advantage of the virtual supply chain to be specific. One thing has been emphasized by the authors again and again and that relates to transparency. Though the demerits of virtual supply chain are not to be explicitly found in the article; it can be seen that the flexibility and transparency generated by virtual supply chain processes outweigh the demerits and disadvantages altogether. Virtual supply chain, as the authors have indicated, eyes at improving customer satisfaction, and it helps the company in enhancing its competitiveness in a global market (Gunasekaran & Ngai, 2007). There are certain critical success factors in the application and implementation of virtual supply chain (VSC) and in the long run majority of companies and organizations, as has been predicted, would be willing to embrace the process to improve their productivity and their market reputation along with their market hold in a global competitive environment to be specific.
