Article 1

The article written in the given website essentially highlights various aspects of the division of labor that has been incorporated in different organizations and companies around the world (Foley, V., 1974). It was a pure capitalist approach on the part of GM that it used in its assembly line where the workers were assigned extremely limited and mundane tasks which were so repetitive that they had to do it over and over again. Because of this, a sense of alienation was crept in among the workers as they did not know what the other stages of the production line were supposed to do. The managers, on the other hand, took the complete supervision of all the processes. Adam Smith very beautifully summed up his views regarding the division of labor as the workers who have been frequently performing same operations with same intent and in same environment, lose every bit to get better and expedient (Foley, 1974). Rather than inventing something new, he ultimately bounds to become stupid and ignorant. This incapability further corrupts his courage and mind and eventually he would not feel even a little bit of urge to defend his country in a war. Smith further goes on to say that it is the division of labor due which any worker gets a particular dexterity in the expense of his intellect, social and marital virtues. Finally, the article seems to reconcile with the idea of how the division of labor could bring about positive changes in an organization.  For example the production line of Toyota allows its workers to extensively cross-train as well as get continuously improve themselves in order to produce quality products.

Article 2

The writer, Cameron Murray, propounded and articulated a completely new aspect of division of labor which is – it is the outcome, not the cause (Durkheim, E., 2014). He doesn’t completely seem to be agreeing with the ideas of Adam Smith that he proposed using the pin factories. He said that the tools required in different production stages results into each person taking up more tasks rather than fewer. The erstwhile viewpoint of division is just about labelling conventions of roles in society (Durkheim, 2014). He suggest that the real essence of division of labor it allows lesser number of people to take up more tasks and therefore the productivity will increase. While, the specialization paints a completely opposite picture. The example of hunting activity makes his point of view clearer wherein there were two tasks hunting and gathering each taken up by certain number of persons that each person took up just one task. Then the introduction of tools such as spear or bow-arrow, allowed each person to take more tasks. Therefore, this example helps us to understand the successful approach of division of labor is not narrowing down the unskilled tasks but more specialists individuals doing as many number of complex and interrelated tasks. In an another example of Crusoe and Friday, Murray emphasized that the tasks of gathering coconuts together and fishing together increased their combined output rather than doing them individually because as a simple fact of matter catching fish may be sub-divided into distinct tasks and sharing them would increase the overall output.
