It was a pleasure to watch this short film because, in this film, the cartoon character has a very appealing personality. Before watching it, I was scared to watch a ‘Dinosaur' film, but I was surprised to see this creature is such a positive and cute role. I liked Gertie very much; she was so happy animal and funny too. I liked the way McCay has shown this character in the film. I found the film very different from the films of Blackton and Cohl. Though those films were also animated, but they were tricky. This film was not tricky, but it was humorous and very sweet. The diegetic sound that the maker of the film used was also very pleasing and smooth. Gertie is shown as a shot in this film because her presence was uninterrupted but then also she made her presence felt at each scene of the film. The maker of the film has used excellent composition because I liked the way he has shown the images of the place where Gertie was standing and doing all the funny stuff like dancing, eating, teasing the little elephant. I did not get bored during the film because there was no hold in the film. Gertie kept me busy in watching her, and she did not remain in a particular pose for a long time. Though there were scenes in which she was asked to move her right and left feet, and that scene was repeated 2-3 times, but then also, Gertie did not stop, and she was continuously doing something to entertain the audience. The Rotoscope that has been used in the film is unique as compared to the other films of the history or past. I found here that the way in which the maker of the film traced the footage and used the frame for making Gertie come into live action was very impressive. He also inserted various objects and charters that came live in the film. This created a fluid in the flow of the film, and the animation seemed to be naturalistic.

The main thing that caught my eye in the film was the way in which the maker of the film expressed the expressions and the movements through Gertie. I was very pleased to see the reactions and the expressions that Gertie was giving and the way that Dinosaur was moving in a smooth way. Though it is very difficult to make that happen, but McCay achieved it by making so many sketches that were shown before the Gertie film was started. I personally feel that it is not easy to make a character move and make him lively on the screen. An animal like Dinosaur is very difficult to make and move him. It is also a complicated thing to do. Rather, it is easy to make a human figure and animate him because humans can give expressions, they can do a variety of stuff with their hands, legs, eyes, etc. But, an animal like dinosaur cannot give many variations in his film. The film got released in 1914 and at that time, the films did not have sounds in them. But this film has sound, and that has made it more interesting to watch.
While watching Gertie, I did not feel that this thing is not alive; I felt that she would come out of my screen and will shake hands with me. I also felt that she was talking to me so, I found that character to be very realistic. I particularly liked that part of the movie when the elephant takes his revenge from Gertie by throwing water on her face, and she lies down for some time as if she was sleeping. I remembered my childhood time when we as kids used to throw water on our friend's face and then they used to run behind us to slap us or to throw water at us in return. So, this film made me remember my childhood days. I also liked that part of the film when Gertie drank the entire water of the lake. It made me laugh so much because the orator asked Gertie to have a little drink from the lake and ‘little’ for Gertie was too much.
I admired the work done by McCay, and I feel that he has made a very good attempt to make this animated film. I would like to watch more films like these in the future.
